REACHUP, Inc. has been afforded opportunities to participate in numerous community capacity building efforts in Hillsborough County. From 2005 -2007 Allegany Franciscan Ministries (AFM) and the Central Hillsborough Healthy Start (CHHS) Project worked as partners to increase opportunities and resources to build the community’s efforts to promote and protect the health and well-being of its citizens, especially mothers, infants, and young children and their families. CHHS formally provided capacity-building expertise and financial assistance to community partners by conducting eight technical assistance/training sessions for 55 persons and awarding mini grants ranging from $1,375 to $2,500 to 11 not-for-profit 501(c)3 and faith based organizations that serve East Tampa families. The awards supported programs including job and health fairs, tutoring assistance, mentoring, breastfeeding education, gang and SIDS education and pregnancy prevention.

Through the award of our first technical assistance grant from the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County (CBHC), aimed at capacity building for the new REACHUP Board, the organization was able to secure several exceptional board trainings, board evaluation and recommendations to improve organizational capacity. The second technical assistance grant allowed us to secure a marketing company that has helped to create a marketing strategy and marketing plan for the transition that included the creation of a website, a logo, and some general messaging materials for organizational identification.

With additional funding, REACHUP, Inc. hopes to not only continue our community and organizational capacity building efforts that were started with the generous support from AFM and CBHC, but expand them to include more organizations and greater technical assistance.
